Where to go for a touch of romance in Majorca
The sights and delights of Majorca are well-known but did you know it's also a truly romantic retreat for couples? Luxury hotels of all sizes, indulgent spas, fine dining and exceptional scenery combine with the wonderful weather to make it a real hit with sun-seeking lovers.
Here, we look at three destinations across the island, each with a blend of intimate atmosphere and genuine charm, which make them the best places for couples to enjoy together in Majorca.
Getting to Majorca: book your break to the Balearics with the likes of Jet2holidays* or TUI*, both of which offer plenty of great value escapes.
Deia
One of the most famed locations in Majorca, this beautiful, arty and rather bohemian village, with stunning views of the ocean from its cobbled street setting, does attract tourists but is never too busy and the perfect place in Majorca for couples to enjoy a romantic break.
The refined atmosphere of Deia has been drawing literary types for centuries including Robert Graves, Anais Nin and Arthur Rackham. Today, it has a small population and retains a sleepy vibe while being home to Majorca's most upmarket hotel, La Residencia, a serious retreat for luxury in utterly chic and stylish surroundings.
There's a small beach, Cala Deia, a half-hour's walk through olive groves, which offers excellent snorkelling and a summertime restaurant serving fresh seafood. The town itself is crammed with cute eateries designed for dinner à deux, while the ancient lanes are best explored hand-in-hand.
Palma
Traditionally, people have flown into Palma and continued on to Majorca's resorts but increasingly, savvy holidaymakers have realised that it's well worth devoting time to this delightful Spanish city. Following significant investment prompting mass regeneration, Palma is now a thriving destination in its own right.
Those in search of dinky streets from where to start their tour should first head to the Casco Viejo (old town) before exploring the impressive Gothic sandstone cathedral, known as La Seu, which was worked on by Gaudi in the early 20th century.
Palma's innovative dining scene offers plenty of choices for couples in search of a romantic culinary date night. As well as high-quality tapas, there's now a great selection of international restaurants, many started by expat chefs who've fallen in love with the island themselves.
In addition to this, shopping in Palma (Camper Shoes has its HQ in Majorca and there's an outlet store here for bargains), and the art scene flourishes with new galleries such modern art mecca Es Baluard drawing a more highbrow crowd.
As for where to stay, make for the boutique Palacio Ca Sa Galesa, which resides in a restored ancient palace mere steps from Palma's cathedral in the city's old quarter.

Soller
Soller is one of those holiday destinations where there's nothing quite as pleasant as simply sitting and watching the world go by in the central old square.
Café Paris is the most popular spot to stop for a drink (try a fresh orange juice made from the locally grown fruit) or simply pick any café with an outside table on one of the leafy cobbled streets before exploring the shops and taking the tram down to the port or the beach.
If you're feeling more adventurous, head to Fornalutx or Biniaraix, small hamlets close to Soller which take you far away from tourists and allow you to explore the natural beauty of Majorca's rural villages.
Fornalutx is exceptionally pretty, and its olde worlde stone houses have been meticulously restored by owners under the watchful gaze of Puig Major - the highest mountain in Majorca.
Biniaraix is more popular with hikers, and for couples who fancy an invigorating walk amongst orchards and stunning Balearic scenery. Try the Cornadors' Circuit, which takes about six hours, winding you 13 km through the Tramuntana Mountains back to Soller.
For an opulent stay, check into the gorgeous five-star Jumeirah Port Soller Hotel & Spa*, which is a grand 120-room property built on a cliff overlooking the fishing village and the Tramuntana Mountain range at Soller's port.
Close to the area's largest sandy beach, this is the perfect base for a special occasion such as a birthday or anniversary, and it's just a short tram ride to the town itself. In fact, taking a rickety ride on one of Soller's old wooden San Francisco trams may well be the best thing to do in Majorca in search of a romantic journey.
Majorca for two: plenty of airlines and holiday companies offer great value breaks to Majorca, including favourite Jet2holidays and big hitter TUI.
