Hawaii weather overview

These mountainous islands, America's 50th state, lie in the centre of the Pacific Ocean, five hours' flying time from mainland United States. Their tropical oceanic climate, tempered by trade winds, has combined with spectacular scenery and colourful traditions to create phenomenal growth in tourism over the past three decades.

The south and west coasts of the islands - where most holiday resorts are located - receive a lot of sunshine tempered by sporadic rain throughout the year. There is a rainy season from December to March though, ironically, the tourism high season, when the scenery is at its most lush and long, hot days break up the rainy spells.

On the islands' mountainous northeast coasts it's a different story: these are exposed to the full force of the Pacific trade winds and experience much heavier rainfall.

The mountains of Kauai house one of the wettest places on earth. Cyclones can hit the islands from May to November but these are comparatively rare. Temperatures are high throughout the year but never excessive, as humidity levels are manageable.
