Kenya weather overview
Not surprisingly, for one of the world's top holiday destinations, Kenya has (on the whole) a delightful climate. Sun worshippers staying in hotels along its Indian Ocean coast are saved from overheating by cool sea breezes; its hilly regions have seasonal changes but are always temperate and even its lowlands avoid the plague of high humidity: thanks to coastal breezes they are hot but dry. Weather conditions vary from region to region.
The coast has two rainy seasons: heavy rains fall during April and May with lighter precipitation in October and November. There can be showers at any time of year but these, conveniently, take place largely at night. Nights can be sultry but days are fresher with an average of 8 hours of sunshine and sea breezes to counter humidity.
Inland from the coast, in the lowlands, the weather is drier and hotter and desert-like towards the northern frontier. Because humidity is low, the heat is rarely oppressive but it is a good idea to acclimatise before rushing about in it.
In the highlands, which range from 1,200 to 2,200 metres (4,000 to 7,000 feet), rain comes twice a year (late March to the end of May and October to mid-December) but is rarely heavy. June to September is the cold dry season (known locally as 'Winter') with a lot of cloud, relatively little rain and cool evenings.
What to pack for Kenya weather
Along the coast light clothes are recommended here with wraps for protection against chilly morning breezes. While inland from the coast take light clothing. In the highlands, warmer clothing and light rainwear is advised for highland visits in the summer months. From December to March, light clothing is fine as you will bask in brilliant sunshine. If your trip includes a visit to Lake Victoria, be prepared for rainfall at any time. In the high mountains, temperatures can be frosty and you could even encounter snow, so wrap up warmly.
