Taiwan, which lies off the coast of China, is a mountainous island with lowlands in its west. It is a land of hot, rainy summers and pleasantly cool but rainy winters. The heaviest rains fall between June and October, when Taiwan is frequently hit by typhoons blowing in from the South China Sea and bringing high winds and torrential downpours in their wake.
