Chile weather overview

Chile, which spans more than 2,500 miles from north to south, is a long, narrow, rugged country with a range of climatic conditions to match its varied topography. Its north lies in the Atacama coastal desert which, although one of the world's driest regions, experiences a lot of cloud and mist. This obscures the sun and prevents the permanently high temperatures becoming excessive.

The spine of the mighty Andes runs down Chile's eastern borders and its northern range has a typical mountain climate of crisp, thin air and light rainfall with permanent snow and ice on its higher reaches.

Most of the population (not surprisingly) is based in the lowlands of central Chile which has a Mediterranean climate with warm, dry summers (November to March) and mild, rainy winters. The winter months can bring frost and snow inland but this rarely affects the coast. This is a sunny region in the summer, clocking up an average of 10 hours of daily sunshine.

The Southern Andes is a region of much heavier snow and rainfall: snow can occur almost down to sea level. The wettest part of Chile is its south which has a cool maritime climate and rainfall throughout the year. Summers are cool, cloudy and changeable while winters vary from fairly mild in more northerly districts, to very cold in the deep south.

What to pack for Chile weather

Pack light cotton clothes for visits to northern and Central Chile with warmer supplements for central Chilean winters. Take much heavier clothing for visits down south (especially in winter) and for trips up into the Andes. Go prepared for rain at any time if you are visiting the south or going to central Chile in the winter months (May to September).
