1. Eastbourne, East Sussex, England

As the many 19th-century seafront villas attest, Eastbourne has long attracted holidaymakers to its sunny south coast shore. It's a place where vintage seaside feels mingle with modern attractions ensuring that there's something for all ages.

While the part-shingle-part-sandy beach is where most people head in August, there are lots of cultural attractions in and around Eastbourne that are worth visiting, too.

As well as historic sites like the striking Eastbourne Redoubt, built to repel Napoleonic forces, and Roman fortress of Pevensey Castle, there's the modernist public space of De La Warr Pavilion. Events are held here throughout summer so be sure to check the calendar.

Meanwhile, Towner Eastbourne is where art lovers will find a huge collection of contemporary artworks and trendy The Art House is the place to pick up a picnic after having a go at the pottery wheel, among other creative options readily available for all to have a go.

Getting active is super easy in Eastbourne, whether you amble on the town's Blue Plaque Heritage Trail, go kayaking, cycling or hit the South Downs Way. Just be sure to take in the wonderful sight of Beachy Head with its renowned red and white striped lighthouse set against the chalky white cliffs.

2. Isle of Wight, England

For a touch of island life without leaving the UK, the Isle of Wight, a mere 22-minute cruise across The Solent, is hard to beat. With a tempting selection of beaches, walking trails, historic attractions and family-friendly things to do, it promises all who visit a memorable stay.

One of the island's most lauded natural sights is The Needles, a series of three chalky white sea stacks, overlooked by a 19th-century lighthouse. These are best seen from The Needles Landmark Attraction, a specially-built cable car.

Families will want to book a day out at Tapnell Farm where an aqua park is sure to tire out energetic little ones, although even more family fun can be found at the theme park of Blackgang Chine.

The Isle of Wight has a seemingly endless supply of beautiful beaches such as those at traditional Shanklin Beach, backed by a lively promenade, and south-facing Ventnor Beach.

While swimming is a reliable old favourite, why not try something new? From sailing, kayaking and canoeing to paragliding over the shore, there are many ways in which you can enjoy the beaches here.

For a bit of nostalgia, however, forget ice creams and stripy deckchairs; it has to be a run on The Isle of Wight Steam Railway. Come evening, set yourself up with some expert-led stargazing. As the island is a recognised UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, you're guaranteed to see all manner of stars, constellations and satellites, clouds allowing.

3. Margate, Kent, England

The seaside town of Margate on Kent's north coast has undergone a steady transformation. Once a slightly tired resort, today, Margate is a burgeoning destination with a beautiful beach to boot.

As well as the Turner Contemporary art gallery, there's the 18th-century chalk mine complete with historic artwork, known as the Margate Caves and Margate Museum, which tells the story of the town's maritime history.

The sheltered, sandy shore of Margate Beach is a hit with tourists and locals alike, while Walpole Bay Tidal Pool is an essential dipping point for any keen sea swimmers.

Margate is also brimming with wonderful eateries. From fine seafood at Angela's and homemade Italian classics at Bottega Caruso to posh fish and chips at Buoy and Oyster and slap up brekkies at The Bus Café, there's something for everyone.

Call by The Lifeboat for a locally-brewed pint or The Old Kent Market for a drink in one of the UK's smallest pubs, The Little Prince.

You can easily explore the wider Isle of Thanet from Margate, including neighbouring towns of Broadstairs and Ramsgate. Be sure to visit Pegwell Bay Country Park, too, and hire a bike to cycle along the Viking Coastal Trail that runs around the coast here.

4. Southwold, Suffolk, England

From the town's dominant lighthouse to the rows of beach huts, pretty cottages, cobbled streets, Victorian pier and busy harbour, Southwold, on Suffolk's Heritage Coast, is as much of an English seaside resort as you could imagine.

With the North Sea to the east and the River Blyth to the south, it has an almost island-feel and it's evident from the off that the sea is a major part of the town's identity.

The pier is often the heart of the action and a good place to spend a long, sunny afternoon with a cold drink in hand. Meanwhile, the swathes of sand and shingle at Denes Beach is where to unfurl your towel. If, however, after a few days you fancy a change of scenery, take the ferry across the river to Walberswick Beach.

There are two golf clubs for the initiated while sailing and model enthusiasts will want to check dates for the much-loved Southwold Model Yacht Regattas, which are held throughout August.

Nature lovers should head to RSPB Minsmere or the Suffolk National Nature Reserve where lagoons, wetlands, marshes and migratory birds can be enjoyed in splendour.

5. St Davids, Pembrokeshire, Wales

Welcome to Britain's smallest city! Located within the boundary of the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park, miniature St Davids has lots to offer within its ancient walls and in the surrounding countryside.

Once a significant place of pilgrimage, St Davids has a number of notable historic sites. Among these, the ruins of the Bishop's Palace, which hosts various open-air performances throughout summer, is a must-see.

On the opposite side of the city's River Alun, you'll find St Davids Cathedral, dating from the 12th century but built on remains that are much older.

For a bit of culture, the Oriel y Parc Gallery serves up art through its objects and paintings that reflect Pembrokeshire life.

The national park ensures there's plenty to do along the coast from hiking the Pembrokeshire Coast Path to coasteering, paddleboarding and kayaking.

Away from terra firma, you can visit the wildlife-rich islands of Ramsey, Grassholm, Skomer and Skokholm, where everything from puffins to porpoises can be seen on a good day by boat.

6. Minehead, Somerset, England

Resting on the southern shore of the Bristol Channel, Minehead was once a crucial trading port and, today, attracts those keen to enjoy its historic centre, sandy beach and proximity to the region's many other sights.

Naturally, Minehead Beach is the star of the show when the weather is on form in August. It's a deep golden sandy arc with shallow water that makes it a great spot for families to while away the days.

Away from the beach, the beautiful floral displays on show at Blenheim Gardens are complemented throughout the month by concerts at the weekend, while golfers will want to check out Minehead and West Somerset Golf Club.

Alternatively, you may want to settle in for a nostalgic ride on the longest heritage line in the UK, the West Somerset Railway.

Get out on the water with a paddleboarding or kayaking session, while walkers need look no further than the South West Coast Path, which starts in the town. Then there's nearby Exmoor National Park, crisscrossed with hiking trails and many chances to try abseiling, rock climbing, cycling and so much more.

7. Edinburgh, Scotland

Mention Scotland's capital in August and most people will think of the Edinburgh Festival, when the city's historic streets and a multitude of venues big and small are transformed for a month of live performances, comedy and music. Then there are the many pop up bars, street food markets and late-night licences that cement it as the place to be.

Please note: the festival attracts thousands of visitors from around the globe each August so, if you're planning to visit be sure to book transport and accommodation far in advance.

However, Edinburgh is more than its festival, even in August. If you have had your fill and want to experience some more of the city, look no further than the collection of National Galleries of Scotland which house a wealth of masterpieces ancient and modern across four major galleries.

Wind up to Edinburgh Castle or step aboard The Royal Yacht Britannia for a visit that might just surprise you.

Want to go local? Get to know the maritime-rich neighbourhood of Leith, with its indy bars, such as stylish Toast, and restaurants like award-winning The Kitchin. If you're there on Saturday, look out for the Leith Market full of arts, crafts and homemade delicacies.

If the weather's behaving be sure to scale Arthur's Seat in the centre of the city for the best views in town, while a trip to beautiful Portobello Beach for lunch at The Beach House and a seaside dip are a must if the sun is shining.

8. King's Lynn, Norfolk, England

The historic port town of King's Lynn in Norfolk offers visitors oodles of history along with countless ways of exploring the surrounding countryside and coastline.

A Hanseatic town, King's Lynn has ancient ties with Europe and was once a major river port. This impressive legacy can be seen through its architecture from the old Custom House and fine merchant houses that stretch down to the waterfront to Saturday Market Place and Tuesday Market Place; the latter, said to be one of England's grandest squares.

The Lynn Museum is where the town's tale through the ages unfolds while True's Yard Fisherfolk Museum examines the now largely disappeared fishing community who called King's Lynn home.

Away from the well-stocked cobbled streets of the town, the Norfolk Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, which includes the Norfolk Coast Path for walkers, boasts wide-open sandy beaches, not to mention ample fossil-hunting opportunities. Meanwhile, a right royal address can be found at Sandringham Estate just north of King's Lynn.

The ruins of Castle Riding Castle give you the chance to see one of the country's best preserved keeps while the bustling city of Norwich is an easy day trip.

9. Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, England

The university city of Cambridge can feel somewhat like a film set. Its ancient winding streets, with characterful and historic architecture, make it a treat for meandering and photography lovers.

Add the winding River Cam and inviting riverside parks into the mix, and you've got a truly tempting summer city break destination.

Cambridge has evolved through the centuries from Bronze Age settlement and vital Roman and Viking trading point to the centre of learning and education from 1209 when the University of Cambridge was founded.

A great way to get to grips with the vast history on offer is to take an official walking tour with an expert guide before taking to the river on a laidback punt and resting eyes on the iconic King's College Chapel.

Unsurprisingly, Cambridge is well stocked with museums from The Fitzwilliam Museum with its world-class collections of art and antiquities and Kettle's Yard with its fine array of contemporary art to The Museum of Cambridge that considers more than 300 years of Cambridgeshire history and heritage.

Outwith Cambridge, sites such as the magnificent Audley End House and Gardens and RSPB The Lodge are within easy reach, while history and aviation enthusiasts might want to plan a day out at nearby IWM Duxford.

10. Inverness, Scotland

The capital of the Highlands surprises with its eclectic mix of heritage, natural attractions and modern amenities. The skyline is dominated by the red sandstone of Inverness Castle and, although the bulk of it is closed to the public, venture to the Castle Viewpoint for a good perspective of the city and River Ness below.

The Inverness Museum & Gallery is where you'll find a collection of artefacts illustrating the Highland way of life through the centuries alongside artwork by local, national and international artists.

Refuel with beer and pizza at Black Isle Bar & Rooms, run by the Black Isle Brewery close to Inverness, before sampling a huge variety of whiskies at The Malt Room. For more whisky experiences, consider a distillery tour at Tomatin or Dalmore.

Further afield, you can discover some of Scotland's most famous attractions. Head to Loch Ness, where opportunities for walking, sailing, cycling and trying to spot Nessie await. Then there's Culloden Battlefield and its excellent visitor centre that takes you through the decisive historic events of 1746.

Along the coast, the Victorian seaside town of Nairn with its pretty harbour is boosted by the impressive site of nearby Fort George; be sure to look for dolphins in the Moray Firth from its ramparts.
