- Deal, Kent
- Clacton-on-Sea, Essex
- Petworth, South Downs
- Brighton, East Sussex
- Aldeburgh, Suffolk
- New Forest, Hampshire

1. Camber Sands, East Sussex, England
For an October holiday that blends nature and history in one, consider basing yourself close to Camber Sands. This wide-open wild stretch of England's south coast, dotted with rolling sand dunes, may heave with sunbathers in summer but it's just as majestic out of season.
Book a stay at a local B&B or an all-encompassing holiday park such as Pontins Camber Sands* to make the most of this stretch of coastline.
While a walk on the expansive three-mile-long sandy beach is a given, don't miss a trip out to the wilderness of Dungeness.
Here, an RSPB bird reserve, with an exceptional variety of birdlife, meets nuclear power station and Prospect Cottage, the former home of artist and director Derek Jarman. It is a captivating day out in an environment that can feel altogether otherworldly.
There are lots of historic attractions to be had nearby, too. The cobbled streets of Rye are close at hand where Lamb House* stands as a fine example of Georgian architecture.
There's also Camber Castle*, the ruins of a medieval artillery fort built by Henry VIII that sits within the Rye Harbour Nature Reserve. You can book a guided tour of both with the Sussex Wildlife Trust.

- 4 hours of sunshine per day
- 1616 days with some rainfall
- 7979 mm monthly rainfall
2. Deal, Kent, England
The stylish seaside town of Deal is an eclectic mix of traditional seaside town and desirable resort. Expect sophisticated restaurants such as The Rose and Deal Pier Kitchen as well as laid-back local watering holes such as The Just Reproach and The Ship Inn, which highlights the town's once notorious smuggling links.
While Deal has a pebbly beach, nearby Ramsgate, with its prestigious Royal Harbour, has a number of sandy options as well as the chance to take a seal-watching trip with Sea Searcher Boat Trips. Meanwhile, scenic Sandwich has all the crooked-beamed houses you'd expect from the best-preserved medieval town in England.
Take in three of the Kent coast's most magnificent castles on the 10-mile walk along the dramatic South East Coast Path from Deal to Dover. Pop into curvaceous Deal Castle*, a 16th-century artillery fort built by Henry VIII, before walking along the shore to the opulent residence of Walmer Castle*.
Then it's up and over the white cliffs towards Dover Castle*, calling in for a cold one at The Coastguard, the pub closest to France from Britain, in St Margaret's Bay.

- 4 hours of sunshine per day
- 1313 days with some rainfall

3. Clacton-on-Sea, Essex, England
Escape to the Essex Sunshine Coast's largest town, Clacton-on-Sea and you'll encounter every tradition of a seaside break. There's Clacton Pier, The Pavilion Fun Park, lively arcades, the Art Deco-feel West Cliff Theatre and the immaculate landscaped seaside gardens.
While the long sandy beaches may not be ideal for sunbathing by October, they certainly make for wonderful seaside walks, past colourful beach huts and historic sites such as the Martello Tower in Martello Bay.
The town is a busy spot full of a variety of tearooms, shops and restaurants, although shopaholics might want to pop to the outskirts for a visit to the Clacton Shopping Village, where high street bargains can be nabbed with as much as 60% off.
Clacton-on-Sea is also handily located for anyone wanting to explore more of Essex or nearby Suffolk, especially in autumn when the leaves are changing and the countryside has plenty of colours on show.
Follow the Naze wildlife trail at Hamford Water National Nature Reserve to see migratory birds or Dedham Vale Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB), aka John Constable country, for a crisp stroll before a rewarding pub lunch.

4. Petworth, South Downs, England
The market town of Petworth in the South Downs National Park has deep roots that date beyond the Domesday Book, in which it gets a mention.
As well as stylish boutiques, cafés and markets, sights such as the Petworth Cottage Museum and Coultershaw Beam Pump tell its story during the 18th and 19th centuries.
The jewel in the crown of the town is Petworth House & Park*, which has a 900-year-strong history. The current house, an elaborate Grade I-listed Baroque creation dating from the 17th-century, holds one the finest collections of art while the gardens, the handy work of Capability Brown, and the deer park could almost justify a day's exploration in their own right.
The South Downs is crisscrossed with over 2,000 miles of public rights of way, giving you lots of options for walking and cycling; sections of the South Downs Way are ideal for both long and short routes.
Other attractions within easy reach include open-air Amberley Museum, Bignor Roman Villa with its restored mosaics and RSPB Pulborough Brooks, not to mention the likes of Chichester and Portsmouth.

Buzzing Brighton needs little introduction; whether it's the mod culture as epitomised by the film Quadrophenia, seaside antics in the form of the lively pier and bar-packed beach, or seeking out quirky items to buy in the city's famed Lanes.
As the capital of cool on the East Sussex coast, you won't struggle to find indy coffee shops or venues offering gigs by bands new and old throughout the year. It's also a great place for record lovers to do some crate-digging at the likes of Resident.
As for major attractions, the bohemian nature of Brighton is epitomised by the iconic Royal Pavillion, a seaside palace at the centre of the town built for George IV and heavily influenced by the Far East.
Once you have wandered its opulent hallways, head to the British Airways i360 observation tower (advance booking recommended) and shoot 150 metres up for a bird's eye view of the coast below.
Get to know the surrounding countryside on a walk in the nearby South Downs National Park at Devil's Dyke or by cycling the Undercliff Path to the neighbouring town of Saltdean.

6. Aldeburgh, Suffolk, England
The Tudor port town of Aldeburgh, with its pebbly beach and ramshackle boat sheds, lies on Suffolk's North Sea coast. It's a thriving destination that's evolved from a place of significance in medieval times to a fishing village and Victorian seaside retreat, as evidenced in the colourful period villas that line the beachfront.
Walk along the shore to visit sights such as the four-metre high 'Scallop' sculpture to the north and 18th-century Martello tower to the south. Browse independent boutiques and sample delicious bites in trendy local cafés while wandering the town's bustling streets.
Soak in the history at the Aldeburgh Museum while admiring the crooked beams of the Tudor Moot Hall in which it's housed.
Music lovers will want to visit The Red House, the former home of the town's most famous son, composer Benjamin Britten. His legacy is also seen in the many music festivals and events that are held in Aldeburgh each year.
Outwith the town, you may want to stretch your legs at RSPB North Warren Nature Reserve or visit the well-known archaeological site of Sutton Hoo*.
Thirsty after all that sightseeing? Head to the Adnams Brewery Southwold for a tour and tasting or stay local at the Adnams Store on Aldeburgh's High Street.

This protected landscape of ancient woods, heathland and coastline is home to an outstanding variety of trees, plants and wildlife (featuring the New Forest ponies) ensuring it's a fabulous spot to explore on foot, or two wheels, when the season changes.
Hike to the old radio direction station and bunker at Huff Duff* for sweeping views or, for a shorter stroll, visit Hightown* where the diversity is easily seen on a brief walking trail.
The main town of Brockenhurst is where you'll find every amenity although there are plenty of other towns and villages that you could base yourself to acquaint yourself with the region such as Lyndhurst, with the New Forest Heritage Centre, port of Lymington to the south and Fordingbridge to the north.
As well as a wealth of outdoor activities from cycling and kayaking to hiking and rock climbing, children can be kept busy at Paultons Park, a family-friendly theme where rides meet worlds such as The Lost Kingdom of dinosaurs and the park's biggest attraction, Peppa Pig World*.

8. Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, England
It's all about the impressive weight of history on a visit to Cambridge. A great way to get to grips with everything this historic university city has to offer is by tagging along on a guided walking tour.
Of course, there are numerous options, from self-guided audio tours to punting tours, but a straightforward walking tour will illuminate what can feel like a daunting world of university colleges, gardens and historic sights.
After a dose of history from the streets, head inside one of the many museums that thrill visitors, from the exceptional collection of art and antiques found at The Fitzwilliam Museum to The Museum of Cambridge to understand more about how Cambridgeshire evolved over a three-hundred-year period.
Once you've browsed the many shops and refuelled in one of the countless tearooms or restaurants, you might consider stepping outside of the city to visit the likes of 17th-century Audley End House and Gardens* or to don your binoculars at RSPB The Lodge. A day trip to the cathedral city of Ely is another easy option from Cambridge.

Norwich has an illustrious past as a major Anglo-Saxon trading point in East Anglia. It has a long and colourful history and any visit to Norfolk's capital is well-rewarded with a plethora of attractions old and new, natural and man-made.
In celebration of its prestigious collection of historic buildings, the Norwich 12 route was established. This heritage trail takes in the city's main places of interest such as 11th-century Norwich Cathedral and Norwich Castle, the medieval Guildhall and Edwardian Surrey House, among others.
Add to this a trip to the Museum of Norwich and you'll have a complete history of the city. Families will want to head to Pensthorpe Natural Park, a child-friendly nature reserve made up of wetlands, woods, farms and grassland, as well as Roarr! Dinosaur Adventure, just outside of the city where over 100 life-sized dinos lie in wait.
Further afield, the Norfolk Broads and North Norfolk's Deep History Coast, known for its fossils and best explored via the interactive augmented-reality app, make for exciting days out in nature, whether you're walking, sailing, paddling or hiking.

Some visit Stratford to delve deep into the life of England's greatest writer. You can do just this at Shakespeare's Birthplace Museum, which remains inside his original family home, as well as at Shakespeare's Schoolroom & Guildhall, by taking in a show at The Royal Shakespeare Theatre or visiting the stunning family home of his wife-to-be at Anne Hathaway's Cottage.
Meanwhile, others want to admire the old and interesting architecture, wonky beams and uneven doorways included, and absorb the history that is omnipresent in Stratford. Make a beeline for the living Tudor Museum for a taste of the town's past.
