Mali weather overview

Most of the population of Mali is based in the south of the country, which lies in the Sahel region, while the northern half is in the Sahara desert. During the winter months, the south sees scarcely a drop of rain but, from May to October, it's a different story. The rainy season reaches a crescendo in July and August when there are heavy downpours, mainly in the afternoons and early evenings.

These are often accompanied by storms. Rainfall decreases the further north you go. In the south, there's a price to pay for the consistent sunshine of the winter months: the Harmattan. This strong, dusty desert wind can make life difficult.

Light clothing is advisable all year round with warmer clothes for winter nights. Take rainwear if travelling south in the summer months.
