Spain weather overview

Spain is endowed with both mountainous and lowland regions and, with the stormy Atlantic lying off one coast and the balmy Mediterranean off the other, it is a land of many climates. Those who associate Spain with the sunniness of its Mediterranean region will be in for a shock if they travel to the north, where clouds and rain are frequently blown in from the Atlantic to cast a blight over warm summer days.

Rainfall eases off as you pass from west to east along the Pyrenees: the mountains and coast of north and northwest Spain are the wettest parts of the country and receive some rain every month.

In central Spain, most precipitation falls in the winter months and takes the form of mountain snow. Summers are hot, long and very dry, plagued by searing dusty winds. What rain there is comes in spring and very early summer, usually in short, intense bursts. Summer lasts longer the further south you go.

The eastern and southern coasts of Spain hold the Mediterranean resorts we all know and love. Here, you'll find oodles of sunshine (up to 12 hours a day in summer) tempered by gentle sea breezes. In the south, however, beware of the Leveche, a hot African wind which sometimes makes the summertime heat unbearable. Most of the area sees very little rain in the summer but, if you venture north of Valencia, you could encounter the occasional fierce thunderstorm.

What to pack for Spain weather

Light clothing is fine for summers spent in central Spain or the Mediterranean coast. Take cover-ups for the winter months and much warmer clothing for central Spain. If you are visiting the north, take slightly warmer attire and be prepared for rain.
