Egypt overview
The popularity of Egypt as a holiday destination stems not only from its ancient heritage but also from its climate.
With vast tracts of the country lying actually inside the Sahara, it is one of the world's sunniest environments throughout the year. Cairo averages 11 hours of sunshine a day in the peak summer and 8 hours in the winter.
An exception to the sunny norm is Egypt's Mediterranean coast where the winters (November to March), although warm, can bring cloudy days and short periods of rain.
More testing, on the coast and in the Nile Delta, are the spring months (March to May) when the Khamsin desert winds can blow strongly and send temperatures soaring making life unpleasant.
Nile weather
The River Nile is the longest river not only in Africa but the world. It flows for well over 6,650 km, through 11 countries, emerging at its mightiest in Sudan and then Egypt before reaching the Nile Delta and the beautiful blue of the Mediterranean Sea.
It's beloved by history and nature lovers keen to experience the surrounding archeology of Ancient Egypt and the wildlife, not to mention those simply after an indulgent and memorable river cruise.
When it comes to deciding when to go to the Nile, we recommend almost any time except the summer months from June to September, as it is very hot with exceptionally high heat and humidity.
October remains fairly hot with temperatures well into the thirties by day, falling to around 20°C overnight. However, by December and into January and February, it can feel cool once the sun goes down with temperatures falling to single figures overnight.
Come springtime, the months of March, April and May see temperatures start to climb once more into the thirties by day with heat and humidity rising also, eventually to very high levels, although conditions remain pleasant.
On occasion - roughly one day per month - this period can also see some afternoons with thick dust or even dust storms, which can disrupt your sightseeing, although these are rare.
